One woman's musings of plant lust for intoxicating blooms

2025 gardening trends

As another year begins, I look at what new plants and trends 2025 holds in store for us gardeners.

Hydrangea Groundbreaker® BlushTM is set to be a sure-fire hit, as the first ever ground cover Hydrangea. Reaching a diminutive 40cm high, it would work well in both small gardens and containers. It will be available to buy from garden centres from July 2025.

I tend to use Geranium’s a lot in my planting schemes as they really are all round great plants. One of my favourites is Geranium x cantabrigiense, a species that is semi-evergreen, so retains some foliage over the winter months and takes on beautiful autumnal tints of red to the foliage. It copes well in dry shady areas. Geranium x cantabrigiense ‘Intense’ is a new variety to the scene with vivid magenta flowers that I’m sure will pack a punch.

With the cost-of-living crisis set to continue, there is bound to be an increase in people turning to DIY in response to this. For those on a low budget garden makeover, make use of apps such as iScape, Home Design 3D Outdoor & Garden and Garden Planner to come up with a simple layout for your garden.

AI has increased everywhere and gardening is no exception. Gardensavy.com is an AI chatbot which can answer all your garden questions, identify plants and diseases.

Smart technology will become more commonplace in the garden, enabling us to control things such as lighting and irrigation from phone apps. Whilst products such as solar fence panels are relatively new to the market, I’m sure in time, they will have a broader range of products in the near future.

Lastly, not strictly a trend, but 2025 will see all compost offered for sale in garden centres, as being peat free. Following lengthy trials, many products on the market now have improved enormously and are just as good or better at growing plants than a peat-based compost.
